Andrew Agrey Abiya
MSc. Student at JKUAT
I am Andrew Agrey Abiya carrying out a Master’s research project at TUA Miyako subtropical experimental and training farm. Here, I contribute to the Moonshot program aimed at utilizing weathered rock products for improved productivity of several tropical crops (Banana, Cacao, Yams, Cassava and Rice), improving soil quality for sustainable land use and climate change mitigation through capture and storage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into agricultural fields. I am particularly interested in the use of Mafic rock powder for improved productivity of Banana and carbon turnover. I participated in programs like Long-term exchange, online course, and the short-term exchange of 23rd International student summit ISS 2024 held in Tokyo Japan at Tokyo NODAI as a Chairperson. The opportunity enabled me to develop good communication, facilitation, and leadership skills. As a result, I am able to communicate my research outcomes in seminars and scientific conferences, participate in discussions and play leadership roles within a research team. My plan is to complete my master’s study and enroll in a PhD program with a focus in developing sustainable soil fertility-restoring strategies that will promote improved productivity, help to achieve food security, and also help in climate change mitigation in sub-Saharan Africa.
